#1 WHY THIS DARTH VADER STYLED BOWL?
Shape of the enclosure has a vital role in the performance of the loudspeaker. Moving of speakers causes sound waves with very complex mixture in terms of frequency, amplitude, phase etc. If the shape is rectangular with parallel walls at certain frequencies two bad things may happen: the walls will start to vibrate due to interference and they will act as additional speakers, but without control. So the general sound will be unpredictable mix of the sound caused by the speakers and enclosure’s walls. Second: standing waves will occur inside the cabinet which will raise enormously certain frequencies and will defeat other. So, why most of the loudspeakers have a shape like kitchen cabinets? Because it’s easy and cheap to do and many loudspeakers manufacturers do not manufacture the enclosures indeed but over source them to cabinets manufacturers. We decided to go to the difficult way: we chose a shape which prevents both a.m. phenomenon. This shape is oval.
#2 WHY ALUMINIUM BOWL?.
Because of the complex design of the enclosure, the best manufacturing method is casting. The enclosure has primary function: avoid problems with interference and resonance and secondary: to be easy for processing. Most common materials for casting are many types of plastics. They do not have so good acoustical specifications and they are made of petroleum. We decided to use aluminium alloy like the aircraft industry, because it has very good acoustical possibilities, it’s easy to be finished and it is not petroleum based.
# 3 WHY SOLID HARDWOOD?
The solid hardwood is excellent for loudspeaker enclosures because of the rigidity and the acoustical possibilities. In addition it looks beautiful.
#4 WHY SUCH SHAPE FOR THE BAFFLE?
To avoid screen effect. When the baffle is flat and glossy another phenomenon may occur: it can act as reflector (in the similar manner as torch reflector for the light). Some frequencies will be enhanced but again out of control. We design very carefully our baffle and test it continuously in the anechoic chamber.
#5 WHAT ARE THE HORNS AT THE BASS PORT AND TWEETER FOR?
The tweeter’s horn is designed for uniform dispersion of the high frequencies, while the bass port is to reduce the turbulence and thus reducing the parasite noise.
#6 WHY SHARP FEET?
To avoid any possibility to transmit vibrations to the surface the loudspeaker is put on.
